"Whatever It Takes" is a return to the type of teen movie that was popular in the 80's. Good stories will never go out of fashion & this film is a modern re-telling, of the famous "Cyrano De Bergerac" tale. The film has a hot young cast & is well written in a fun & entertaining way, that will have strong appeal with teen audiences. Although the main character hasn't got a big nose all the similarities & themes of the classic story are apparent.
Ryan Woodman (Shane West) is in love with the most popular girl in school Ashley Grant (Jodi Lyn O'Keefe). Unfortunately for Ryan, she doesn't even know he exists. Ryan's best friend & neighbour is Maggie Carter (Marla Sokoloff). Chris (James Franco) is the high school's Mr. Popularity & he has the hots for Ryan's friend Maggie. It just so happens that Chris' cousin is Ashley Grant, the girl Ryan likes. Chris & Ryan come up with a plan that will enable both of them to get the girl of their dreams. Chris arranges a date for Ryan with his cousin Ashley in exchange for Ryan's help to win over his neighbour Maggie.
As the story unfolds a very amusing stream of outrageous situations ensue, including the finale at the school prom complete with Titanic theme. "Whatever It Takes" is a hip romantic comedy starring a sweet young cast who all put in solid performances. It has a feel which harks back to the days of the classic teen comedies of the eighties. A fun film for all to enjoy, just don't take it seriously.
